As the scarcity of the commodity is still on the increase,
Nigeria has spent about eighty billion aira, and four hundred million
annually, importing tomato paste into the country. It was even noted,
according to the report, that some of these imported pastes are substandard.
The report that tomatoes processing factories has moped-up
the commodity in Nigeria, has been disproved as the minister of Agriculture and
Rural Development briefed newsmen in Abuja, adding that such report are false
and unfounded.
He also added that ‘ highly productive species, with the
favourable environment and lack of management abilities for containment is the
major cause of its spread like wildfire without control. The recent development
has been confirmed in states like Lagos, Plateau, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina and
Jigawa.
The minister however stated that the FG has started
consulting with states and experts in order to device a lasting solution to the
pest-aided destruction. He also added that experts had come up with many
species of tomato that flourish in the western part of the country, as
alternatives.
