Becoming A Celebrity Part 4 : Getting Ready For Cricitism

Linda Ikeji

Whenever you step into lime light, you become an inspiration to mentees, an icon to admirers and a target to critics. The route to stardom and the time spent in the spot light can’t be real without a slice or a bunch of criticism and controversy. What is casual and seemingly ordinary in the life of a lay man is magnified and “headlined” in the place of a celebrity. No public figure without a public life that subject to the scrutiny and judgment of the public. When one steps into the spot light, he becomes a model and almost expected to be perfect, of which some human errors on his side would gain much publicity or blown beyond proportions. Being a celebrity does not necessarily spell fun because actions can be misunderstood and different meanings read into a single step taken.  One of the abilities to being a celebrity resides in being able to embrace controversy and ride criticism.
A celebrity must come to the fact that he can’t please everybody and so, should be focused on delivering his trade mark and styles to his fans or targeted audience. Your uniqueness as a celebrity must be greeted with controversy of persons who would barely see your good side, not everyone that attends your concerts or shows is a fan. Some are professional critics who are on the watch to detect your lapses and mistakes. One that wants to embrace stardom must prepare to face criticism even as that is also an avenue for publicity. You must at some point be a focus or topic for blogs, gists and gossips for the bad thing or misunderstood good things you did of which would not have gained such attention if you were not a celebrity. If nobody talks about you, then you’re nobody. There’s no celebrity or public figure that doesn’t have side stories or 100% justified by all.
“There are elements of truth in every criticism”. So goes the popular adage. This implies that critics or “haters” at most points are not entirely wrong. So it is necessary to harness the resource of criticism. At some points, criticism tells hard truth harsh way. Wisdom demands you don’t necessarily fight criticism but respond to relevant accusations.
Criticism if well used can make one better, though wisdom is necessary. Standing on a mirror, only to discover that you’re not looking too good does not demand you break the mirror; so deduct the truth in criticism and work on them to be better, wiser and stronger. But don’t for the sake of criticism lose your uniqueness or change your message in a bid to please everyone, become generally accepted or look white. It is better to be known for a thing than not to be known for anything. Be positively unique and confident on your game. Don’t hate critics. Don’t hate back haters.
Criticism can make one lose confidence, focus and even channel time and resources to frivolities. Be yourself and aspire to become better even as you appreciate your level and personality. If you want to be a celebrity then prepare to face criticism and controversy; it’s part of the game. Feel free to like our page, for the subsequent editions for the upcoming...
